Welcome back to the podcast.  Today I want to talk about scarcity mentality. so scarcity is the flipside of the coin of abundance and one can help us and one will hurt us in our weight loss scarcity if you think about feeling like you’re not getting enough, especially when it comes to food that is scarcity and so I want to talk today about how this mentality might present itself and how it might be holding you back from your weight loss goals, and some tips have had to overcome it so I want to show you how this might present itself in a different area other than food and then we’re going to come back to food like all things sometimes if we see it differently something that maybe doesn’t close to home it’s always a lot easier to see this is why group weight loss programs work so well, right we might not feel comfortable telling a story but we hear someone else we recognize ourselves in that story. It’s so obvious right when someone else is saying it and then we can learn from that to the same idea that’s what I want to bridge to. That’s what I want to show you how scarce might present itself outside of weight loss, then will move back to food and weight loss so I see a lot about money people have a lot of money scarcity people that have a lot of money a lot of money scarcity so it’ll be so much money and we don’t like that right we’re mad about that so and so is making $1 million that’s not fair why do they get to make $1 million Were jealous right so we think that there’s a fairness issue were jealous and those are sort of the key feelings I want you to examine if you feel those coming about something scar might be the scar if someone else has it I don’t get to have it, but there’s only one right resources are scarce My friend Jane is making $1 million then that means she’s taking from the rest of us or then there’s not enough of the money of the pie to go around so if Jane makes $1 million I’m not allowed to make $1 million and so that can create scarcity that can create jealousy that can create anger OK so this idea that there’s just one pie and if someone else has it we don’t get it or they are taking from others to have what they want so I think money and material possessions. It’s just very easy to see that you see it all the time people get very angry when someone else has and it’s because they scarcity if someone else has it, then I don’t get to have it The opposite of that abundance right there is not $1 million I can make $1 million you can make $1 million I can have even if someone else has and no one has to sacrifice. No one has to give up what they have for Jeane to have $1 million. There’s enough for all of us to go around that’s abundance scarcity there’s only one pie if Jane has $1 million she either stole it or now I don’t get to have it so The way this shows up in food is this idea of cleaning our plate? OK is really deeply programmed so I’m going to say some stuff I didn’t know why I did that it’s scarcity so a lot of these behaviors are a lot of what I’m going to say my resound with you might sound true and it’s probably just deeply in bed OK so this idea we need to clean our plate right because that’s all the food there’s ever going to be if I don’t eat it all now then I’m not going to have enough later, there’s only one batch of food and so I better eat it all. I better not leave any on my plate not waste it that’s scarcity buy more of what we need just in case it’s not going to be there we go back manufacturers. Love to pray on this natural tendency of ours to be in scarce thinking Oreos limited time flavor because I might not get it again so I need time is like a limited time offer only a few left. This sense of urgency is praying on our scarcity thoughts if you Caveman resources were scarce concept, not doing anything anyone told us that’s wrong it’s just really embedded in our resources to be scarce, the best example of this food those dang Girl Scout cookies and I love the Girl Scouts wonderful organization, but dang if they don’t pray on our scarcity right they’re so popular every kid you will find multiple opportunities to buy Girl Scout cookies but it’s only a limited time we can only get it in the short little window, so I better stock up because I won’t be able to get them any other time so they highlight this limited availability. They triggered the scarcity in us and then we have to buy. We have to stockpile we have to take it because if we don’t get all of our we better get more because the next person after me wants to buy them all and then I don’t get enough, I need to have it’s not going to be enough I better stockpile I take from someone else this is all scarcity thinking cookies usually pre-order right and then we have months of Girl Scout cookies right and then they come around all the time you can probably if it’s not Girl Scout cookies season still go onto the Internet and find someone that will sell you Girl Scout cookies it’s all made up OK there’s no shortage of Girl Scout cookies every single year they always have plenty they never sell out but they have triggered the scarcity. They do direct sales, persuasive, techniques, personal connections all of it they’ve got Girl Scouts. They have all the time when I have clients that are going out to dinner and they coach afterwards and they tell me they over dinner and we’ll start getting into the details about it and it’s usually the idea of scarcity. I don’t get to go out to dinner that often it was a special event, I had never had that dessert before they only sell this at this particular restaurant and we don’t go here very often so I don’t know if any because the reality of the situation could probably go online and get those Girl Scout cookies anytime that we want them if something is that special at the restaurant we could plan for it we could order it to go we could go pick it up if that dessert is so special it’s so amazing they never make it we could go there just for dessert the next week and it was still there. We could get a whole meal to go and eat it for the next two or three days at this food scarcity right now in America is not real. We have scarce food there is food everywhere of us are losing weight but the food industry marketing they know about this and they are going to use it to their advantage and they are going to create this demand. Create this scarcity this limited time this it’s very special but you better act now mentality so that we buy the food at that restaurant would be happy if you wasted food on the table as long as your credit card comes out and you pay for it they are trying to make money. They are praying on our primitive idea of scarce resources and it works now so we don’t have we don’t have to do it anymore, we have to start unwinding the scar mentality when we are constantly in scarcity at least to a lot of comparison at least to a lot of over eating for what I talked about all the examples talked about earlier it can really affect our entire lifestyle so I talked about money and food there’s show up so I want to be aware of your Going to unwind it the best way to do that is to transition to an abundance mindset and I’m going to do an entire podcast episode next week where we are going to talk about how to generate an abundant mindset because that mindset is so much better for our lifestyle not just our weight loss, but our overall health, our interactions with people this compare and despair we can Start to get rid of a lot of those things I want to do homework for this week I want you to start I would love for you to write down my mentor paper, thinking about how scar is showing up for you. Remember, when I moved to Louisiana I was because there were so many fairs and festivals, because the scarcity around fairs and festivals and special occasions is a little bit yellow. You only live once, but also like it’s a limited time like the festival I better eat all these types of taste all of them because I’ll never get to do this again it’s special it’s limited it is scarce, the fact of the matter is any of you in Louisiana with me there is something going on nearly every day there is a special occasion special event more days and not so if you’re using scarcity, it’s a special event over eat you are going to be in trouble if you live somewhere like I do because there’s always a special event I usually use in my example with my clients. I consider it very close to the Girl Scout cookie scenario right we only get king cake during carnival is the Mardi Gras season Mardi Gras carnival season starts the whole season is when it’s acceptable to eat cake of the year but it’s mainly during carnival season so there’s they set up the scarcity we can only have king cake during Mardi Gras during carnival season, not true but it drives a lot of people to eat the amazing thing people have done and I always love annuity and I love capitalism and people earning a dollar has all these bakeries. I love them they all do something a little special so then it becomes like this King cake taste off right and then everyone has our favorite and so it’s not just one piece of cake. It turns into like this of pancakes this tasting of pancakes because everyone is using this scarcity tactic you can only get this particular cake at this particular place and it’s the best and then we’ve all got it right Well it’s not as good as this one over on this side of the lake and you need to taste this one and then it’s just I love it. I think it’s amazing to watch. I also tell you that I have not had cake and probably I have not had more than one piece of cake in probably six years. King cake is one of those things that I eat. I have a hard time so I’ve eaten plenty of my share of cake. I am in very much abundance about cake. There’s scarcity is not going to get to me. I know that I have eaten more than my fair share cake in my life and I know that I can get pancake anytime I also know because I know about sugar in my hormones that I’m never going to feel satisfied from a piece of cake and it’s just going to make me hungry or later so the net Outcome is very negative for me to eat a piece of cake so all those things they can market scarcity all they want they’re not going to win that particular game with me and I hope today will help you with your scarce mentality and help the food manufacturers lose one more battle when you realize this is what’s having into Try and get you to eat on specialty items that Oreo is not that special I don’t care what flavor it is or how limited the time is they’re always going to have probably 20 varieties of Oreos choose that Girl Scout cookie is really available most of the time and if you really like that flavor they probably made a cookie with that flavor or creamer with that flavor you can get it anytime be aware of this I would love for you to just write it down this week where our places this is sort of gotten. The best of you is eating at that special restaurant is it I’m on this cruise I’m on vacation I’m it’s this type of season it’s limited quantity limited flavor, limited edition so I would love for you to reach out and let me know.
